Today is settlement day. Yippee = Movin' loads of stuff this weekend. Boooo.
However this (overgrown) view from our new kitchen window makes it all worth it. We can’t wait to get the keys today.
The process of moving house is quite possibly our worst nightmare. Ironically, we do it annually (today is our fifth time this year). We know that feeling all too well when your head’s spinning with chores as long as your arm. So here’s our quick checklist (yes, we love a list) to ensure we don’t forget a thing.
Note I am no angel at this task, as one relocation I forgot to connect the electricity which resulted in an esky and candles for over 7 days. And I almost did it AGAIN yesterday, whilst I scrambled to contact Origin Energy at 6pm last night.
So here 'tis. The day after to do list.
Cancel prior electricity (and gas), and register your new account at the new premises. Rule of thumb is to give 7 days to connect.
Tip: Don’t forget! And shop around and negotiate for the cheapest rates. They can vary considerably.
Contact your banking institution (or broker) to ensure your mortgage accounts are running smoothly (such as fortnightly deduction, discount package, low interest rate, offset account(s) etc).
Tip: Request a bank manager to oversee your accounts so simple tasks like these can be done via internet banking or over email or phone in future.
Arrange a locksmith to install new systems if you feel that the real estate agent (or prior dodgy tenant) may not have provided all the keys or buzzers.
Tip: Install a few deadbolts as a cheaper alternative (as doors and windows are usually replaced during the renovation).
And finally, the almighty task of changing your physical (and postal) address.
Tip: Start with the online changes. Then draft a letter template and pump the remaining changes out via snail-mail. The 70 cent stamp is worth it’s weight in gold in comparison with wasted hours in phone ques on hold (with bad music).
